HSE Unveils New Strategy to Reduce Workplace Mishaps
8 06 2009The HSE has unveiled a fresh approach to dealing with the worrying state of health and safety in workplaces across the UK. Named as ‘Be Part of the Solution’, the strategy aims to inculcate a more common sense approach to managing risks at the workplace and to debunk some of the common myths in this regard.
The new strategy will stress on the fact that ensuring proper health and safety measures in the workplace is not only good for the workers but it will also increase the competitiveness of the business. The amount of spending that a business has to make on health and safety is much lesser than what would have to be paid as compensation if an accident does occur. Thus putting in place strong health and safety systems is not a liability for the business but a way of reducing the risk of huge payouts at a later stage. Research conducted by the HSE shows that both the workers and the management understand the importance of health and safety. Almost 90% of managers surveyed said that their employees were their prized assets, while more than 60% of the employees said that having a strong health and safety setup boosts their morale and makes them feel that the company recognizes their importance.
It has been revealed that due to recession many employers are looking to reduce their spending on health and safety. According to the HSE, this will be a big mistake as it will significantly increase the risk of accidents and would end up being an even bigger financial burden on the company due to compensation claims.
To involve the management in dealing with these problems, the HSE is now urging them to sign a pledge to the new strategy. This, the HSE believes, will ensure that commitment to the initiative comes right from the top layer of the companies.
