Recovering from Labioplasty
30 08 2009Labioplasty is a relatively minor procedure that can be performed in less than two hours using a local anesthetic (although full sedation is available if you prefer). For the first week, you’ll have to limit your physical activity, but most genital surgery patients are able to return to most of their everyday activities after the end of the second week.
One the day of your genital surgery, it is important that you have someone available to drive you home, as you won’t be operating a motor vehicle or doing much of anything else for a few days.
Once you are home, you’ll need to spend as little time standing up or walking around as possible. In the first days following your labioplasty procedure, rest is the key to a successful recovery. You’ll also want to apply ice packs; when washing is required, an irrigation bottle or low-flow shower head is best, and great care must be exercised to disturb the stitch line. A medicated ointment, such as Polysporin, should be applied often and in generous amounts.
As far as pain and discomfort are concerned, your doctor will prescribe a suitable analgesic. This should be taken as directed; to not wait until the pain becomes overwhelming.
On the second and third day, you can begin to stand and walk about a little. Rest however is still the most important thing; even if you feel much better, keep physical activity to an absolute minimum.
It is also recommended that a laxative be taken while you are on the pain medication. There are two reasons for this: first, constipation is often a side effect of the pain medication. Secondly, having to strain in any way during bowel movements will result in a great deal of unwanted pressure on the stitch lines and the potential consequences should be obvious.
By the time you return to the doctor for your first post-operative follow-up visit, you’ll still be experiencing some bruising and swelling. This will be over by the end of the second week.
Although you’ll be able to return to most of your everyday activities after the first two weeks have passed, the nature of this surgery precludes certain activities such as bicycling or horseback riding for at least a month to six weeks (sexual activity is also highly inadvisable until the surgery has healed completely).
