ASA Supports Virgin on Broadband Ad Issue

8 09 2009

The recent press advertisement of Virgin Media broadband running nationally may have impressed many, but it rubbed its competitor Sky on the wrong side, leading the latter to launch a complaint against Virgin’s ad.

The Virgin Media ad claims that its fibre optic broadband service has been formulated in compliance with the internet, to which Sky argued that fibre optics had been instrumental in paving the way for internet service development in the first place, in which light Virgin Media’s claim appears rather baseless.

Sky also contradicted Virgin’s declaration of being “future proof” when there is hardly any valid evidence to prove that its service is capable of competing with next generation internet. Virgin Media was also of the view that copper wires used by providers including Sky fail to deliver services such as low signal attenuation, low signal disturbance, and high capacity to carry data. This too was refuted by Sky, which claimed that copper wire networks were not entirely unreliable.

But much to Virgin Media’s relief, the ASA paid little heed to Sky’s accusations. The ASA rejected Sky’s complaints stating that it is up to consumers to base their belief or disbelief in Virgin’s advertisement. Moreover, the agency also said it believes that Virgin Media used these statements more as a strategy for their publicity rather than with any vile intention to demean its competitors.
